Our Immune series: Adaptive Immune System
Your body’s immune system is your best anti-flu defense. What happens... if your first line of defense starts to fail and the enemy microbes breakthrough? In the first part of our series, we talked about the Innate immune system. Innate immune system: The first line of defense is protected by at least 100 trillion good bacteria and probiotics on your skin, eyes, nose, and throat and inside your intestines. Viruses & Harmful bacteria Symptoms like a runny nose, sore throat or cough. If this progresses into a fever, the fight will be fought inside the body, in the bloodstream. Then, the white blood cells will be locked in a battle with the unwanted invaders. The Adaptive immune system Here begins the job of the second line of defense, the Adaptive immune system must stop the invaders. If it progressed to the lungs, then it is called Pneumonia and, there is a serious risk of mucus filling up the lungs. Then it becomes vital that the white blood cells remove every invader and prevent them from reaching the lungs. It becomes a war of numbers as the viruses multiply and the body must produce billions of new white blood cells. Your Natural immune system You have an army of Natural Killer Cells that must quickly identify and remove the invaders. White blood cells can swallow the viruses but engaging in close-quarter combat also means that viruses may inject their DNA into white blood cells and turn them against us. White blood cells make a weapon called Nitric Oxide (NO) to kill viruses. A protein called L-Arginine is the direct precursor for making nitric oxide. We recommend: Start snacking on these foods... Nuts and seeds are significant sources of L-Arginine. 1. Pumpkin seeds: One of the highest concentrations of L-Arginine at 6.9 g per cup 2. Melon seeds 5.2 g per cup 3. Walnuts contain 4.5 g per cup 4. Almonds contain 3.5 g per cup 5. Pine nuts contain 3.2 g per cup 6. Grass-fed or free-range eggs and meats are rich in Arginine 7. Watermelons, beetroot, pomegranate, and garlic contain nutrients that can make L-Arginine. Supplements to look out for: Studies have shown that there are specific groups of nutrients that help support your white blood count. Taking extra supplements with these specific nutrients is a good option. We highly recommend a high-quality supplement like our L-Arginine and Nitric Oxide to support your immune system. Finally, if you are making white blood cells, it is also important that your soldiers are circulating and hunting the enemy microbes. Remember to do daily deep breathing and sleep well.
